August 8 オリンピックの花火 fireworks, pyrotechnics

    オリンピックが始まった。らしい。テレビ放送はどうなっているのだろう、と遅ればせに公式サイト The Official Website of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games <http://en.beijing2008.cn/> から 右側の "Olympic Video" の "Select you Country/region" の、最初に日本をクリックしてビデオを見ようとしたら、「あなたの地域では見られません」みたいに出たので、しかたなくUnited States of Americaを選んでクリック。メニューバーの中に "TV & ONLINE LISTINGS" というのがあって、クリックすると、番組表とかと同じで例によって郵便番号を入れろ Enter your zip code と指示があって、どうやらNBC11（このへんのケーブルだと003チャンネル）を中心に放送するということはわかりました（こんなことは常識かもｗ）。あとCNBC (058)とMSNBC (060)とかで放送。あ、NBC をウィキペディアで調べるとつぎのように「沿革」のなかに書かれていました。――

1995年 2000年から2008年までのオリンピックのアメリカ国内における独占放映権を総額35億ドルで獲得（グループ局のCNBC、MSNBC、USAネットワークにおいても放映、2003年には2012年までの独占放映権も獲得）。

あなるほど。で、上記の番組表を見ると、こんな感じ――TV & Online Listings |Viewing Schedule | NBC Olympics 〔NBCオリンピックかよ!〕――ですが、今の段階ではなにやらわかりませんので、ふつうのテレビ番組表を見ると今夜7時半に3ちゃんで入場式が放送されることがわかりました。どうりでニュースでちらっとしか朝はやっていなかったのね。

　　 夜ということがわかりましたので、前のページに戻って、写真のところを見ると、 "Related" のなかに　"Pyrotechnics" という見出しがあった。開会式の "Opening Ceremony: The Pyrotechnics" のフォト・ギャラリーです <http://www.nbcolympics.com/destinationbeijing/photos/galleryid=183811.html>。

    日本（のWEB）では、「ド派手な開会式：花火１２万発　ギネス記録に」（同「中国情報局」）とかニュースになっているようですが、英語のニュースでは見当たらず（探し方へたなのかも）、読んでもどういう記録なのかよくわからんのですが（オリンピックとしての最高というのではなくて一度のpyrotechnic show としての最高数ということ??）、まあ、開会式として話題のようで・・・・・・。

　　　ここから英語の勉強メモと、あと、洋書とかのことをなるたけ書かんとあかんなあと反省したので、文学作品メモです。

　　　写真のキャプションは一貫して "Scenes of fireworks in and over the Opening Ceremony of the 2008 Olympics." となっています。『リーダーズ英和辞典』は pyrotechnics を「花火技術；花火の打上げ；《弁舌・演奏などの》はなばなしさ」とし単数形の pyrotechnic は、形容詞として「花火（技術）の；はなばなしい」、名詞として「花火；花火に似た装置，火工品《ロケット点火装置・爆発装置など》；花火用燃焼物」、そして派生語として別の形容詞のpyrotechnical、副詞としてpyrotechnically を挙げています。　『ジーニアス英和辞典』だと、pyrotechnics は「［単数・複数扱い］1　 花火製造術　2　《正式》花火の打ち上げ［使用，ショー］　3 《正式》〈弁舌・機智・演奏などの〉華々しさ」としています。pyrotechnic のほうはpyrotechnical と並べて形容詞のみで、「1 花火の　2 華々しい；センセーショナルな」です。『ロングマン現代アメリカ英語辞典』は明快に、というか、こういう長い語にしては珍しく3つ並べて次のように記述しています。――

1  [plural] 《FORMAL OR TECHNICAL》 a public show of FIREWORKS
2 [U] 《TECHNICAL》 the skill or business of making FIREWORKS
3 [plural] an impressive show of someone's skill as a public speaker, musician etc.
―pyrotechnic adj.

    要するに簡単にいえば「花火」のフォーマルな英語がpyrotechnics です（ロングマンの1番、これはジーニアスの2番）。〈語源的にはpyro は　pyramid とかと同じく　fire の意味のギリシア語の接頭辞で、それのtechne 術だから花火術とかいう2番の意味がいっぽうであり、また「ハナバナシイ技」みたいな比喩的な3番の意味もあるというわけです。

　　この「ピロテク（ほんとはパイロテク）」の比喩的な使い方でモーリちゃんの父の記憶に残っているのは、アメリカの自然主義作家Stephen Crane （1871-1900: BeatlesのSgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band　のアルバムジャケットに登場することで有名か?）がニューヨークで落ちていく娘マギーの生涯をたどった『街の女マギー』 (Maggie: A Girl of the Streets) という中篇小説です。 "A Girl of the Streets" という副題だけでセンセーショナルだったようです。作家の技的にはいかに生の断片ではなくて環境の中で生まれて死んでいく生きざまを長篇小説のような長さじゃなくて捉えるか、というようなことがあったのだろうか、と思いついていまGutenberg のe-text Maggie を見てみたら、生まれるところは書いていませんでした（w）。しかし確か数十ページの長さなのに19章に章立てして、ときに印象主義的といわれるような、感覚的、比喩的な言語で、マギーという花のように開いて花のように散っていった少女の生きざまが語られます。あ、以上駄弁です。

　　その11章で、兄のJimmie が、妹のマギーがつきあいはじめた Pete が働いているバーにやってきて喧嘩になるシーンがあり、店にいた静かな客が通りでたぶん腰を抜かしてバタバタしている様子の描写にピロテクが使われます。あんまり意味がないですが長めに引用します。――

　　In a small, tossing group, the three men edged for positions like frigates contemplating battle.
　　"Well, why deh hell don' yeh try teh t'row us out?" cried Jimmie and his ally with copious sneers.
　　The bravery of bull-dogs sat upon the faces of the men.  Their clenched fists moved like eager weapons.
　　The allied two jostled the bartender's elbows, glaring at him with feverish eyes and forcing him toward the wall.
　　Suddenly Pete swore redly.  The flash of action gleamed from his eyes.  He threw back his arm and aimed a tremendous, lightning-like blow at Jimmie's face. His foot swung a step forward and the weight of his body was behind his fist.  Jimmie ducked his head, Bowery-like, with the quickness of a cat. The fierce, answering blows of him and his ally crushed on Pete's bowed head.
　　The quiet stranger vanished.
　　The arms of the combatants whirled in the air like flails.  The faces of the men, at first flushed to flame-colored anger, now began to fade to the pallor of warriors in the blood and heat of a battle. Their lips curled back and stretched tightly over the gums in ghoul-like grins.  Through their white, gripped teeth struggled hoarse whisperings of oaths.  Their eyes glittered with murderous fire.
　　Each head was huddled between its owner's shoulders, and arms were swinging with marvelous rapidity.  Feet scraped to and fro with a loud scratching sound upon the sanded floor.  Blows left crimson blotches upon pale skin. The curses of the first quarter minute of the fight died away.  The breaths of the fighters came wheezingly from their lips and the three chests were straining and heaving.  Pete at intervals gave vent to low, labored hisses, that sounded like a desire to kill. Jimmie's ally gibbered at times like a wounded maniac.  Jimmie was silent, fighting with the face of a sacrificial priest. The rage of fear shone in all their eyes and their blood-colored fists swirled.
　　At a tottering moment a blow from Pete's hand struck the ally and he crashed to the floor.  He wriggled instantly to his feet and grasping the quiet stranger's beer glass from the bar, hurled it at Pete's head.
　　High on the wall it burst like a bomb, shivering fragments flying in all directions.  Then missiles came to every man's hand.  The place had heretofore appeared free of things to throw, but suddenly glass and bottles went singing through the air. They were thrown point blank at bobbing heads.  The pyramid of shimmering glasses, that had never been disturbed, changed to cascades as heavy bottles were flung into them.  Mirrors splintered to nothing.
　　The three frothing creatures on the floor buried themselves in a frenzy for blood.  There followed in the wake of missiles and fists some unknown prayers, perhaps for death.
　　The quiet stranger had sprawled very pyrotechnically out on the sidewalk.  A laugh ran up and down the avenue for the half of a block.
　　"Dey've trowed a bloke inteh deh street."
　　People heard the sound of breaking glass and shuffling feet within the saloon and came running.  A small group, bending down to look under the bamboo doors, watching the fall of glass, and three pairs of violent legs, changed in a moment to a crowd.
　　A policeman came charging down the sidewalk and bounced through the doors into the saloon.  The crowd bended and surged in absorbing anxiety to see. 〔強調付加〕

　　戦争や武器の語彙が素手の喧嘩にもちこまれ、同時に動物的・獣的な状態に還るという自然主義的なメッセージが入っている一節です。

　　"sprawl" は手足を投げだして寝る、座る、倒れる、というような意味の動詞です。この "quiet stranger" は少し上の青字のところで、（おそらく危険を察して）姿を消した人です。で、なんで店の前にとどまっているのかよくわからないのですが、おそらく店から出る前に喧嘩が始まって、その光景の恐ろしさに腰が抜けたようになって店の前の通りでバタバタしていたのではなかろうかと（推測）。それを見て人は笑います。そして"Dey've trowed a bloke inteh deh street."と誰かが言う。 ニューヨークのバワリー地区の下層のひとたちの言葉ということで、作品内の会話はだいたいくずれた英語になっていますが、They've thrown a bloke into the street."で、bloke は "man" "fellow" の意味です。『リーダーズ・プラス』はアメリカ俗語として「酔っぱらい」を挙げていますが、この作品では他の箇所で（酔っているわけではない）男の意味で使っています。で、「（店から）ひとり男が放り出されたんだ」と言っているわけです。モーリちゃんの父は昔読んだときには、これは事実ではないと思っていたのですが、いま読んでみると、事実なのかもしれません。なかなか店から出るに出られず腰も抜け、放り出された（ほんとかいな？）。まあ、よくわかりませんけれど、いずれにしても、この男のピロテクは、"an impressive show of someone's skill" というような、つまりヒケラカシとかミセビラカシとか自発的なものではないことは確かです。ただ「ハナバナシイ」という感じでよいのでしょうか。あるいは皮肉が入っているということでしょうか。

16章冒頭では形容詞形で出てきます。――

　　Pete did not consider that he had ruined Maggie.  If he had thought that her soul could never smile again, he would have believed the mother and brother, who were pyrotechnic over the affair, to be responsible for it.
　　Besides, in his world, souls did not insist upon being able to smile. "What deh hell?" 〔強調付加〕

　　（ピートは自分がマギーを破滅させたとは考えなかった。マギーの魂が二度とほほ笑むことはない、と仮に考えることがあったとしても、ふたりのつきあいにpyrotechnic だった母親と兄にその責任がある、と考えていただろう。）

　　　ここでは「うるさかった」 みたいな感じなのでしょうか。上記2例のどちらにしても花火みたいにdisplay が強いということでOKなのでしょうか。

 　　いまOED (Oxford English Dictionary) を参照することができない環境なので、推断はやめておいて、もしかしたらつづく～♪
