　　この3人のパリでの三角関係の話です。もともとモーリちゃんの父がこのLevy の 920 O'Farrell Street という本 (1947 年というとStein の死んだ翌年ですけれど、そこに意味はないようです。Levy はパリ時代を描いた文章を本にする計画もあったようですが、それは未完のままに終わりました) を買ったのは、ガートルード・スタインへの興味からではなくて、自分が今回住むことがかなわなかったサンフランシスコという街への愛情からで（笑）、あとはとくにユダヤ人ということで、ゴールドラッシュ時にやってきたユダヤ人たちがどのように経済的にサンフランシスコに関わったのだろうという興味ぐらいでした。実際、この本は唐突に1906年のサンフランシスコ地震で家が崩壊して閉じるわけで、1907年にAlice とふたりでパリへ向かい、Gertrude Stein と出会いという話までは時間的に入っていません。それでも最後から2ページ目には "In my travels I walked about the ruins of ancient cities, tourist-wise, speculating upon evidence of destruction as great as the fire which had followed upon it.  I returned home to behold a devastation as great as any I had witnessed, created by the earthquake alone, but by the fire which had followed upon it.  I had left closely packed city streets; I returned to a barren waste of hills and to isolated buildings in unconvincing locations."  と、廃墟をめぐる（ということはヨーロッパの）旅から地震のあったサンフランシスコに戻ってきたかのような書き方がされています。実際は地震後にヨーロッパへ旅立ったのに。これは記憶違いか、意識的な虚構なのでしょうか。

　　さて、ウィキペディアの、3人の関係を記述した箇所の後半です。――

     In 1908, they summered in Fiesole, Italy, Alice staying with Harriet Lane Levy, her companion on her trip from the United States, and her housemate until Alice moved in with Gertrude and Leo in 1910.  That summer, Gertrude stayed with Michael & Sarah Stein, their son Allan, and Leo in a nearby villa.  Gertrude and Alice's summer of 1908 is memorialized in images of the two of them in Venice, at the piazza in front of Saint Mark's.
     Alice arrived in 1907 with Harriet Levy, with Alice maintaining living arrangements with Harriet until Alice moved to 27 Rue de Fleurus in 1910.  In a portrait written at the time, Gertrude humorously discussed the complex efforts, involving much letter writing and Victorian niceties, to extricate Harriet from Alice's living arrangements.  In "Harriet," Gertrude considers Harriet's nonexistent plans for the summer, following her nonexistent plans for the winter:

     She said she did not have any plans for the summer.  No one was interested in this thing in whether she had any plans for the summer.  That is not the complete history of this thing, some were interested in this thing in her not having any plans for the summer.... Some who were not interested in her not having made plans for the summer were interested in her not having made plans for the following winter.  She had not made plans for the summer and she had not made plans for the following winter....  There was then coming to be the end of the summer and she was then not answering anything when any one asked her what were her plans for the winter.

1908年、スタイン達はイタリアのフィエゾレで夏を過ごし、アリスは、アメリカからの旅仲間で当時の同居人でもあったハリエット・レイン・リービの所に滞在した。その夏、スタインは兄のマイケル・スタイン夫婦とその息子アランおよびレオと近くの別荘に滞在した。スタインとアリスのこの夏は、フィレンツェのサンマルコ広場で撮った写真に収められている。
　　アリスは1907年にハリエットと共に渡航してきて、アリスがハリエットとの住まいの環境を整備していた。当時書かれた描写では、スタインが多くの手紙を書いていることやビクトリア様式の繊細さなど複雑な事項をユーモアを交えて話し、アリスの住環境整備からハリエットを解放しようとした。『ハリエット』の中で、スタインは夏にハリエットがいない計画を考え、続いて冬にもハリエットがいない計画を考えた。

彼女は夏の計画はまだ無いと言った。彼女が夏の計画を持っているかについて誰も興味が無かった。それはこのことの完全な履歴ではない。誰かは彼女が夏の計画を持っていないこのことに興味を持っている。彼女が夏の計画を持っていないことに興味が無い者は、彼女が次の冬の計画を持っていないことに興味がある。彼女は夏の計画を立てていなかったし、次の冬の計画も作っていなかった。夏の終わりになって、誰かが冬の計画があるかを尋ねたら彼女は何も答えないだろう。

 

     注釈的にまず書きます。フィエーゾレ Fiesole はイタリア中部のトスカナ州、フィレンツェ北東にある保養地（古都）です。"summer" という動詞は、「夏を過ごす」ですが、特に「避暑する」の意味。さて、 後半にもスタインの文章からの引用があります。わけわかりません（笑）。3行目ぐらいの "Michael & Sarah Stein" の "&" はinformal で、formal にはwrite out して"and" と書くべき。Saint Mark's はふつうは "St. Mark's" (イタリア語で San Marco) で、ヴェニスにあるロマネスク＝ビザンチン様式のサンマルコ大聖堂。"the piazza in front of Saint Mark's" というのはいわゆる St Mark's Square （サンマルコ広場）。訳が「フィレンツェの」になっているのは理由不明。"memorialize" という動詞は、たぶん、メモリアルアートの大野屋みたいな感じのイロのある言葉で、もっとストレートな言葉を使えよとモーリちゃんの父は小さな声で言いたい。

　　2番目の段落の "with" の反復と情報の反復については既に書きました。 "living arrangements" についても、辞書には載っていないみたいなので自信はありませんが、書きました。"portrait"というのは、もちろん言葉による肖像画ですけれど、ガートルード・スタインが、1934年にPortraits and Prayers というタイトルで出版した本に収められた1909年から33年までの 58のポートレトのひとつが "Harriet" です（ほかには画家のピカソやセザンヌやマチスとか、作家のヘミングウェイ、T・S・エリオットとかいろいろ）。 このポートレトはファースト・ネームだけで「ハリエット」なんです（失礼な、プンプン、あるいは奇妙な親しみでしょうか）。"involving much letter writing and Victorian niceties" のところは、原文を全部読まないとたぶんわからないので、いい加減なことは言えませんが、手紙については前に勝手に推測したように、スタインからレヴィに送ったのでしょうけれど、「ヴィクトリア朝の上品さ（だか優雅さ）」というのは、ストレートではなくて微妙にあてこするようにさぐるようにレヴィへ要請したというようなことなのではないかと思われます。"to extricate Harriet from Alice's living arrangements" は既に示唆したように、"complex efforts" に直接つながります。

　　さて、そうして、後半でもまたわざわざスタインの文章が引用されているわけです、わけのわからない（笑）。そして、もとの英語版のWikipedia は、ここでもまたMellow の著書から孫引きしています。前に書いたように、　Charmed Circle という本はGoogle ブック検索で（いくらか）読めるのですけれど、 第6章の "The Couples" のセクション3の149ページから151ページくらいの記述と引用が関わっています。けれど150ページの半分くらいが読めないので、よくわからないのでした(w さすがにただじゃ全部は読めんか― http://books.google.co.jp/books?id=2CDJkDE8aZ0C&pg=PA144&lpg=PA144&dq=Mellow+%E3%80%80living+arrangements+Charmed+Circle:+Gertrude+Stein&source=web&ots=43skmZtjLn&sig=UZfemVU3m2qyLBwDh7B5qHCdeqY&hl=ja&sa=X&oi=book_result&resnum=1&ct=result#PPA150,M1)

　　Mellow の引用もブツ切れなのですが、もう少し長いです。地の部分の文章をかいつまんで紹介すると、 ガートルード・スタインがアリス・B・トクラスに同居しないかといったのは1909年の春のことらしい。兄のレオ・スタインも喜んで承諾した。ガートルードもアリスも心は決まったのに、ハリエットの問題があったために正式に引っ越すのにはさらに1年がかかった。ガートルードもアリスもハリエットにふたりの決定を告げるのは気が進まなかった。かわりに、ハリエットから次の冬の計画について訊こうとした――ヨーロッパにとどまるのか、アメリカに帰るのか。ふたりはハリエットに彼女の計画について質問するだけで、そうはっきりとは求めなかったらしい(原文― They seem not to have asked Harriet very pointedly, merely questioned her about her plans.  "ask" の意味はあいまいです)。意図的にか無意識にかハリエットはふたりの質問を理解せず、次の夏についてはまだ計画が決まってないと答えた。ハリエットが決断を遅らせているあいだ、二人は待った。けれども（とMellow は勝手なことを言います）この状況は面白い言葉によるポートレトの機会をガートルード・スタインに提供した。決心を鈍るハリエットについての習作。

The portrait begins by dumbly stating the problem, then offering a too-general response.  It then corrects itself to take into account all parties interested in Harriet's not having made any plans.
 

She said she did not have any plans for the summer.  No one was interested in this thing in whether she had any plans for the summer.  That is not the complete history of this thing, some were interested in this thing in her not having any plans for the summer.  She was interested in this thing in her not having any plans for the summer.  Some to whom she told about this thing were interested in this thing.  Her family were interested in this thing in her not having not yer made any plans for the summer.  Others were interested in this thing, her dress-maker was interested in this thing and her milliner.

It then proceeds to outline the very special case of the author and Alice:

Some who were not interested in this thing in her not having made any plans for the summer would have been interested in this thing in her not having made any plans for the summer if she had made plans for the winter.

The portrait travels through a circular route in time:

What would be her plan for the summer.  She would not have any plan for the summer.  She would not really come to have a plan for the summer and the summer would be a summer and then there would be the winter.  She would not have any plan for the winter and some would ask her what was her plan for the winter.  There would not be then any more summer.  There would be then a winter.　〔このあとの引用は読めず〕

   やっぱり全部読まんとわからんでしょうね。わからんものを引用するなよ（と言いたい）。わからんのですけれど、 "Harriet's non-existent plans" というのは「ハリエットがいない計画」という意味ではないでしょう（わからんものをわからんように訳すなよ（と言いたい））。

　　図書館で調べている余裕がないので、インターネットで調べると、1934年11月26日号のTime 誌の書評がありました―― "Stein Way, Grand: PORTRAITS AND PRAYERS--Gertrude Stein--Random House ($2.50)"  <http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,882347,00.html>。　書評子（名前は載っていない）は、（意外にも）"egregiously clear" として "Harriet" からまとまった引用をします（"one Harriet" という書き方で、このハリエットがどのハリエットかを敢えて特定しようとしないで、文章だけを問題にしているのですけれど）。――

The reader who wins to p. 105 will discover a portrait of one Harriet which is egregiously clear. Some of it: "She said she did not have any plans for the summer. No one was interested in this thing in whether she had any plans for the summer. That is not the complete history of this thing, some were interested in this thing in her not having any plans for the summer. She was interested in this thing in her not having any plans for the summer. Some to whom she told about this thing were interested in this thing. Her family were interested in this thing in her having not yet made any plans for the summer. Others were interested in this thing, her dressmaker was interested in this thing and her milliner. Some then were interested in this thing in her not having made any plans for the summer. Some were not interested in this thing in her not having made any plans for the summer.  　　モーリちゃんの父の感覚だと、このスタインの文章のわからなさのひとつは、　"any" と "some" の曖昧さ、それに否定のnot と no とがどう限定的にかかわるのかかかわらないのか、なのですけれど、それは日本語に移せないのではないかという気もします。逃げて直訳することにする。「彼女は言った、その夏に何の計画もないと。誰もがこのことに関わりがなかった、彼女がその夏に何か計画があるかないかに。それはこのことの完全な歴史ではない、このこと、彼女がその夏に何の計画もないことに関わりがある者たちがいた。彼女〔これは誰でしょう?〕はこのこと、彼女がその夏に何の計画がないことに関わっていた。彼女がこのことを話したなかにはこのことに関わっている者たちがいた。彼女の家族はこのこと、彼女がその夏にまだ何の計画もないことに関わっていた。このことに関わっている他の者たちもいた、彼女の仕立て屋はこのことに関わっていた、そして帽子屋。だから、このこと、彼女がその夏に何の計画もないことに関わっているものがいた。このこと、彼女がその夏に何か計画がないことに関わっていない者たちもいた。このこと、彼女がその夏に何か計画がないことに関わっている者たちは、もしも彼女がその冬に計画があったなら、このこと、彼女がその夏に何の計画もないことに関わっていただろう。」　わ、わけわからん。・・・・・・いや、わからなくはないですけど。あとから何もと何かを適当に加えてみたらヘンになった。いや、わからん。

　　あらためてウィキペディアを見ると、150ページの読めないところから引いている最後の部分、"There was then coming to be the end of the summer and she was then not answering anything when any one asked her what were her plans for the winter."は、1910年の夏と冬のことを言っておるのでしょうね。その前の部分の、"There would not be then any more summer.  There would be then a winter." の、次の冬で終わり（で夏はない）かというのが1909年。

　　Mellow の引用後の地の文章を読むと、その後サンフランシスコからHarriet の友人のCaroline Helbing が来てパリに滞在し、その間、スタインとアリスとハリエットとキャロラインの4人でしばしば食事をしたり画廊まわりや買物に行ったりしたが、そのHelbing がアメリカに帰る際に見送ったアリスが "Caroline dear, you must see that when Harriet goes back to America she does not return to Paris because it is already arranged that I should go to stay with Gertrude and Leo at the rue de Fleurus." と語り、相手は "That is what I suspected.  You can count on me." と答えた、という会話が引用されています (p. 151) が、この、ハリエットにとっては悲しいセリフがいつのことなのか書かれていません。けれども、(とMellow は続けて、)ハリエットは1910年の夏、マイケル・スタイン一家と一緒にアメリカに戻るまで帰らなかった。そしてその9月にイタリアでの秘書いや避暑から帰ってきたアリスとガートルード・スタインは、スタインの家での生活を始めます、アリスはスタインの秘書になって。やがてアメリカのハリエットからアリスに手紙が来る。ふたりのアパートを片付けて、買った絵をサンフランシスコに送ってくれ、と。しばらくカリフォルニアにいることになろうだろうから、と。

　　また同じ画像を貼ります。1909年夏のフィエーゾレ。このときもうアリスはガートルード・スタインから告白されています。肩に手をまわされたアリスはカメラのほうを向いていますがハリエットはなぜか目をそらしています。ハリエットの気持ちを思うと切なくなる写真なのでした。
