    Rayne は rain と同じ音だからカエルと相性がいいのだろうか。ルイジアナのカエル祭を宣伝すべきいわれもすじもないのだけれど、 スザンナに思いを馳せて記しておきます。

Every year in Louisiana, the Rayne Chamber of Commerce hosts the biggest frog party in the world, namely the Rayne Frog Festival. Thousands of party-animals from across the country converge at the 20,000 sq. ft. Rayne Frog Festival Pavilion in search of a fun-filled weekend:

• family entertainment,
• music,
• great food,
• carnival rides,
• beauty queens,
• bullfrogs in costume,
• frog racing,
• frog jumping
• and eating fried frog legs and other taste temptations.

Rayne Frog Festival is a celebration of Rayne, Louisiana's heritage as the single largest worldwide shipper of frog legs throughout most of the 20th century.

Live bands perform every afternoon and evening filling the air with toe-tapping music...Cajun, Zydeco, Country, Swamp Pop and Variety. Festival-goers also enjoy the sounds of musicians with local, regional and national acclaim.

  やっぱりここでも商工会みたいなところが後援してます。 ふたつめのセンテンスで「何千というparty-animals がクニじゅうから集結」みたいに書いてある"party animal"というのは、カエルのことではなくてパーティー大好き人間というような意味のスラングです。Solano Stroll のほうでも party ということばが使われていたと思いますが、なんか人が集まる機会（まあ、そこで飲み食いや踊りがあれば）はなんでもパーティーみたいな感覚。

　　"fais-do-do" は『リーダーズ』英和辞典に載ってますしウィキペディアにも 「フェイドードー」として項目がありますが、"ouaouaron" はないみたい。Quebec French で bullfrog (ウシガエル，食用ガエル) (grenouille-taureau)のことのようです。

    さて、カーニヴァルやアート&クラフトショーなどもあるようですが、気になる競技についてです。Festival のHPには次のような記載があります。――

The Rayne Jaycees host a diaper derby where the babies must crawl to the finish line and are disqualified if the little tikes decide to walk.  This is always a crowd-pleaser." 

　　　diaper derby おむつダービー diaper というのは赤ちゃんのおむつのことです。tike は「ちびちゃん」「ちびっこ」。ゴールまで這い這いしなければならず、もしも小さながきんちょが歩くことに決めたら失格。突如歩き出す「赤ちゃん」がおるのだろうか。もひとつ。――

The Rayne Lion's Club picks its annual Frog Derby Queen in a contest that features young ladies dressed as jockeys showing their costumed live frogs and competing in a frog jumping contest.

　　出たな。カエル娘。あれ?  カエルの格好をするのではなくてジョッキーの服装をするだけですか。カエルのほうがコスチュームをつけるちゅーの? で、ジャンプコンテストなの?   mmm.  考えていたより大人しいのね。

Rayne, the second largest city in Acadia Parish with 8,700 inhabitants, is known as "The Frog Capital of the World." The annual Frog Festival in September attracts some 50,000 people each year. The town was laid out in 1880 when businesses from the town of Poupeville moved their establishments about a mile to the newly established Rayne railroad station. 

   Acadia Parish の "parish" というのはルイジアナの「郡」で、他の州だと county に相当するものですね。人口8700人で2番目に大きいって、ちっちゃいですね。人出は50000人（ふ、勝ったなw）。町ができたのとカエル産業が始まったのと同時だったのですね。

There is a Lion's Club Frog Derby. This is a strange contest because little girls dress up frogs and then sees which frog jumps the farthest. They also have frog eating contests. Can you believe that? There is a queen's contest where they crown a Miss Rayne.

　　ダービーとクイーンは別の催しなのですね。ダービーのほうは女の子の競技・・・・・・でもこの "little girls" ってフェスティヴァルのHPで "young ladies" って呼ばれているのと同じですか。ああ、南部やね。

　　〔細かいことですが、この英文、ふたつめのセンテンスの "then sees" の主語がないですね。「これは奇妙なコンテストで、なぜって小さな女の子たちがカエルたちを着飾って、それからどのカエルがいちばん遠くまで跳べるか見るんです。」〕

　　 そして、あらためて（もはや画像検索ではだめだと）調べてみると、去年のダービーの写真が見つかりました。―― "35th Annual Rayne Frog Festival: Photo Ops September 2007" はい、ヤングレディ－と呼ぶことになんの異存もないです。

   あと、アマゾンで調べた、Cheryl McCarty and Tony Olinger, Rayne [Images of America Ser.: Louisiana]  (Arcadia, 2002) の表紙の拡大写真。カエルを手にした女王の後ろにはCalifornia Louisianna [2009.8.13訂正] Frog Company: "The Largest Shippers of Frogs in the World" の文字と"RAYNE, LA." の名の入ったカエルの絵の看板が掲げられています。Back Cover もあります。スカートの感じはflickr のと同じ感じミニスカで、60年代後半でしょうか（あてずっぽう）。
