February 9 日々の科学の天気問題、付2008年4月26日のカリフォルニアの空 Severe Weather Questoins

   前に、小学校の教科書はジオ（社会・地理）とマス（算数）の2冊だけと書いて、そのままにしてありますけれど、ほんとうはサイエンス（科学）の教科書もあったのでした。10月になって不意に知ったのですけれど。でもこれは週に2日しかなく、かつ先生はモーリちゃんが英語が理解できないことがわかっているので、――かどうかしりませんが、――モーリちゃんの父向けの宿題を出してきます。

　　この日は天気の問題だったので、記念に書きとめてみたいと思います。3と4はカリフォルニアの天気の話ですし。

1.  What causes tornadoes?
⇒ When warm air over the land runs into a mass of cold air, the warm air is forced upward violently; at the same time, cooler, denser air flows in from the sides, and twists the warm air.  A spinning funnel forms that "sucks up" everything in its path like a giant vacuum cleaner.

2.  What causes hurricanes?
⇒ As a tropical storm moves west, it draws energy from the warm water.  The storm gets larger, and the wind spins faster and faster.  The spinning wind draws a lot of warm water vapor high in the storm system.  When the vapor cools, it condenses.  The process of condensation releases even more energy, which makes the system spin even faster.

3.  How does the water cycle affect weather in California?
⇒ Water evaporates from the ocean, particularly where the Sun has warmed the ocean's surface.  Wind carries the water vapor and clouds to California.  As the moist air rises and cools over the coastal mountains and the Siera Nevada, the water condenses and falls back to Earth's surface.  (During the spring and summer, the water flows back to the ocean, to complete the water cycle.)

4.  (1) How does the ocean influence the weather in California?
⇒ The ocean creates mild temperatures all year along the California coast.  Because the temperature of the ocean does not change quickly, the ocean acts to keep the air temperature near the coast even all year, rarely too hot nor too cold.  (2) The ocean creates breezes near the coast.  Because water heats up and cools down slowly, there is often a difference in the temperature of the land and the ocean: uneven heating starts a convection current* in motion, which results in wind.

　　"Severe Weather Questions" と題された問題だったのですけれど、"severe" はquestions を修飾しているのでしょうか。しょうね。
