　〔まず前回の補足〕 このあいだ歌詞が不分明だったAlbert E. Wier, ed., The Songs of Stephen Foster (New York: Harcourt, 1935) は、4番までありました。――

　　ううむ。これは4番以外もPeters版ではなくてHolt　版を元にしていますねー。冒頭の　"I came" (comeじゃなくて）とか "bullgine" とかはHolt版です。それも1848年2月の初版ではなくて〈仮にそうだとして、2番以下のSusanaの誤記はSusanna 直っているし" Killed five Hundred Nigger" の大文字も直っている）少しあとの（Doverが採用した）Holt 版にどちらかというと近いように思われます。それでもすっかり同じではなくて両者を折衷し、誤りは直したような印象です（それは特に3番の "Says I, I'm coming" のところに感じる。Dover 版だと　"Says I'm coming" で、話者じゃなくて夢の中のスザンナが語っているようにも見え、 初版（Earlier American Music 版=RPO版）だと "Says I, im coming from"　と、まあ、19世紀に私をIとiと二つ別々に並べて書くことはないでしょうし、明らかな誤植に見えたところです。

The use of the arrangements in this volume is unrestricted for

　　　 “Stephen Foster, America’s Troubadour” というのは前年にHowardが出したフォスターの評伝です。John Tasker Howard についてWikipedia はわずか数行しか記述してありません。――"was an early American music historian and writer. His Our American Music was an early general history of music in the United States, published in 1931. He was also the curator of the New York Public Library from 1940 to 1956." けれども、Howard (1890-1964) という人は自分も作曲家であり、ピアニストでもあった研究者でした。ともあれ、フォスターの音楽の造詣が深い人が研究書に続いて著した演奏用の楽譜集です。

　　　24日には見落としていたのですけど、Introduction の14ページ(XIV)に　"Oh! Susanna" についての解説がありました。――

Within three years after February 25, 1848 at least twenty-one different editions of Oh! Susanna were issued by various publishers, of which nineteen were pirated by those who had no right to the song. In his early years as a song-writer, Foster often handed manuscript copies of his new songs to minstrel performers. These singers would promptly turn the manuscripts over to music publishers who would immediately copyright and issue the songs. What appears to be the first edition of Oh! Susanna was issued by C. Holt, Jr. of New York, February 25, 1848, ten months before the edition authorized by Foster appeared, an issue copyrighted by W. C. Peters of Louisville, Kentucky, December 30, 1848.
In spite of the large number of pirated editions Peters is said to have made $10,000 from Oh! Susanna and a few other Foster songs, and it is commonly supposed that Foster virtually made Peters a present of them. According to one account, Peters paid Foster $100 for Oh! Susanna. It became tremendously popular, first among the minstrel performers, and then as the marching song of the “forty-niners” on their way to California during the gold-rush.
There is no reason to believe that Oh! Susanna, like Lou’siana belle and Old uncle Ned, was written for the “Knights of the S. T.” in Allegheny. It is one of the best of Foster’s nonsense songs, infectious in its melody and rhythm, with a joyousness that is spontaneous and buoyant.

　　　（1848年2月25日以降3年のあいだに、少なくとも21種の異なる「おおスザンナ」の版本がさまざまな出版社から出されたが、そのうちの19はこの歌の権利をもたない者による海賊版だった。フォスターはソングライターとして駆け出しのころに、しばしば新しい曲の原稿の写しをミンストレル・ショーの演者たちに自ら手渡した。 渡された歌手たちは原稿を即座に音楽出版社に引き渡し、音楽出版社はただちにコピーライトをとって曲を出版した。「おおスザンナ」の初版と思われるものはニューヨークのC・ホルトによって1848年2月25日に出版されたもので、フォスターがauthorizeした版、つまりケンタッキー州ルイヴィルW・C・ピーターズがコピーライトをとった版が出版される10ヶ月前のことだった。多数の海賊版があったにもかかわらず、ピーターズは「おおスザンナ」とほかのフォスターの若干の歌曲で10000ドルを稼いだと言われている。また、フォスターは自分の曲を実質的にあげたに等しいと一般に考えられている。ひとつの記述によれば、ピーターズは「おおスザンナ」に対してフォスターに100ドルを支払った。この曲は非常な人気を博した。まずミンストレル・ショーの演者たちのあいだで、それからゴールドラッシュの時期にカリフォルニアへ向かった「フォーティーナイナーズ」たちのマーチ・ソングとして。「おおスザンナ」が「ルイジアナ・ベル」や「アンクル・ネッド」と同じくAllegheny の「S・T・騎士団」のために書かれたと信じる理由はない。これはフォスターのナンセンス・ソングの最善のもののひとつであり、自然にわき起こるうきうきした喜びにあふれ、メロディーとリズムがノリやすく覚えやすい。

　　　で、ハワードが採用したのは実はPeters版、それもあくまで3番までです。譜面の最初に左右にまたがって以下の記載があります――"Edited, with new accompaniment by JOHN TAKER HOWARD / Words and Music by STEPHEN COLLINS FOSTER/Mixed and Men’s Voice Chorus Arranged by N. CLIFFORD PAGE"

　　そして、巻末の資料の中に(p. XXII)、Holt 版の初版、つまり1848年2月25日にcopyright が取られている初版のファクシミリが掲載されています。

 

ファクシミリの外の下のところには説明として、"The Holt edition of “Oh! Susanna” copyrighted February 25, 1848. Although presumably an unauthorized edition it is, according to present knowledge, the first edition of the song. The edition authorized by Foster (published by W. C. Peters) was not entered for copyright until December 30, 1848.
Foster Hall Collection" と書かれています。ファクシミリの下のところの手書きの字はよく読めませんけど "Deposited in Clerk's Office So.[uthern] Dist.[rict] of N.[ew York] Feb. 25, 1848" じゃないかと思うのですが(ぐぐって見ての推測ですと、正式には"the clerk's office of the district court of southern district of New York" といったのかもしれない)、とにかくこれがcopyrightにかかわる記述のようで（しかし誰が書き込んでいるのでしょ。clerk なのかしら）。

　　　ハワードは、この1934年版では、Holt版が「unauthorizedなエディションではあるが、今日知られているところでは、この歌の初版である」ことを知りながら、しかし「フォスターのaurhorizeした版は1848年12月30日になってコピーライトをとった」ということで、少しは心揺れながらも(?) 、楽譜ではPeters版にしたがって3番までしか入れていません。そして、楽譜下の注が示すように、一般に知られている "commonly known" なメロディーとPeters 版がズレていることも知っている。自ら作曲家でもあるハワードはauthor, authority, authorizaton というものにこだわったのでしょうか。

　　 　しかし、10年後に彼が "historical notes" の執筆者としてかかわるRandom House 版 A Treasury of Stephen Foster (1946) では、4番を3番にくりあげて、問題の2番をはずすというかたちになるのでした。これはWill Earhart and Edward B. Birge, ed., Songs of Stephe Foster: Prepared for Schools and General Use と同じ取捨選択です。50曲を収録したハードカヴァーのRandom House 版は、UCBに同じのが3冊あるくらいだから、ポピュラーなエディションだったようですけど、つぎかつぎのつぎくらいでとりあげます。

　もうひとつ、Foster Hall が出てきたので、Josiah Kirby Lillyという好事家というかFoster蒐集家について。このFoster Hall Collectionの同じ資料写真のNew York の上の――・――のところで切られているのがWier 版のイラストではないかと想像されます。Foster Hall はEarhart & Birge 編のSongs of Stephen Foster の初版(1934年)を出版した Josiah Kirby Lilly が個人で収集したフォスター関係の資料を収蔵した建物です。このEarhart と Birge の本の目次の前のページに、"Foster Hall, Indianapolis, Indiana" のモノクロ写真があって、その下に説明がありました。

　　　　The songs in this book and the greater part of the knowledge we now have of Stephen Foster’s life and work have become available largely through the efforts of Josiah Kirby Lilly, of Indianapolis, Indiana. His fondness for the melodies of Stephen Foster led him to search for first editions of these songs, and then for portraits of Foster, and for information that would throw increasing light on the composer’s life. A small building erected on his estate to house a pipe organ was named Foster Hall, and from 1931 to 1937 it became a fascinating treasure house of all things pertaining to Stephen Foster. In 1937 these things were given by Mr. Lilly to the “people of the United States,” and they are enshrined in the Stephen Collins Foster Memorial, located on the University of Pittsburg campus in the city of the composer’s birth.
　　This collection of Foster songs is here presented for the second time. It first appeared in the Foster Hall edition published in 1934 by Mr. Lilly, who has since transferred publication rights to the University of Pittsburg.

　　　Josiah Kirby Lilly （1893－1966) という人は自身で1933年にフォスターの本を出していて、どうもその本と、彼の収集した資料の公開が、1934年にかくも出版が集中した背景にあるので はないかと思われますが、rare book で馬鹿高い本で、かつUCBにないので、ちょっと見る前に萎えてしまうかもしれませんが、萎えなかったらそのうちに。インディアナまで飛ぶかな。
