6月24日にmusic library で調べたときには、関心の中心は19世紀のsheet music のファクシミリにもっぱらあったので、かならずしも20世紀の諸版をみんな仔細に見ていたわけではなかったのだが、7月2日にまた歩いて大学まで行ったときは、パソコンも持参したので（だってコピーを取っても2度手間ですし、金かかる）、ありったけの楽譜を見まくったモーリちゃんの父であった。

　　Elmer Griffith Sulzer, ed. Forty Stephen Foster Songs (Chicago: Hall and McCreary, 1934) 64pp. Tall 8vo ホチキス綴じ.

"Compiled and Arranged by Elmer Griffith Sulzer" と本には書いてあるのですが、Sulzer という人は当時Lexington のKentucky大学の先生でした。その後Indiana大学へ移ります。なにが専門だったのか知りませんが（って音楽だったのでしょうね）、60年代70年代になって永年の趣味であった鉄道関係の本を出して、古典としていまでもリプリントが出ています。ちょっと我が国の小池滋さんをほうふつとさせる感じです。有名なのは "The Ghost Railroads of ～" というシリーズで、ただし、ghost というのは小池さんが好きかもしれない幽霊ではなくて、ghost town の ghost です。abandoned されてしまった廃線をこよなく愛する鉄ちゃんの本。

　　で、それはどーでもよくってーと。"Preface" で、つづくcopyright の部分もあわせて引くと以下のように語っています。

 

This collection of songs of Stephen Collins Foster represents the realization of a desire on the part of the compiler and publishers to make generally available a Foster song book of maximum utility. Extreme care has been exercised in following Foster’s original melodies and the spirit of his arrangements. Colorful piano accompaniments are provided where their use is desirable.

Every song is complete—all of Foster’s original verses being included. [. . . .]

「オリジナル」の尊重を強調しつつ、アレンジも含めたcopyrightを記しています。

　　　で、 14－15ページに "Oh! Susanna" が載っています。歌詞を引きます。

　　　これは、3番までしかないPeters 版を元にしつつどこからか4番を補い(" I’ll look all ’round and ’round" というちょっと字余りなフレーズがどこから来たのでしょう?) 、いっぽう3番までの語の綴りも適宜修正したという印象です。

　　4番まであるところは、同年のWier と同じです。
