    アル・ジョルソンは1886年ロシア帝国のリトアニアのユダヤ人の家にエイサ・ヨエルソンとして生まれ、家族より先にワシントンD・Cでラビの職を得ていた父のいるアメリカへ1894年に残りの一家で移住、幼くして兄のハーシュ〈ハリー）とふたりショービジネスの世界に入り、ストリートパフォーマンスを「アル」と「ハリー」名で行ないます。1900年、14歳のときに家出してニューヨークへ出ますが、16歳の就労年齢に満たないため、職を得られず、2年間貧乏生活を送る。その後サーカスやバーレスク・ショーの仕事をする。兄と他の一人とトリオを組み、兄が抜けてデュオとなり、さらにソロとなります。20世紀初頭は新しい映画メディアの胎動期で、アメリカでも次第に安価な映画館が生の芸能館よりも大衆に受けるようになっていく時代の変わり目でした。アルは変化を求めて "blackface" のメーキャップを始めます。1908年までサンフランシスコのヴォードヴィルで人気を博し、ニューヨークへ戻る。1909年、Dockstader's Minstrelsのスターで演出家のLew Dockstader の目にとまり、blackface として契約をする。さらに演出家J. J. Shubertの目にとまり、1911年ニューヨークのWinter Garden Theater での芝居 La Belle Paree　に抜擢され、3月20日初演の夜、blackface でフォスターの歌曲を歌います。この芝居は104回公演のヒットとなる。同じ年の芝居 Vera Violetta でもblackface の歌手として登場。The Whirl of Societyで登場したGus というblackface がはまり役となり、その後の芝居にGus が登場する。1918年には"musical comedy" Sinbad に出演、この作品のロングランによりあとで追加された George Gershwin 作曲の "Swanee" がアル・ジョルソンの一番有名な持ち歌かもしれません（これはGeorge Gershwin にとっての初ヒット作でもありました）。

　　　 アル・ジョルソンは1920年には最も有名なブロードウェイ俳優となり、映画にも出演し、やがて "the world's greatest entertainer"と呼ばれるまでになります。ジョルソンは現在、blackface 役者としてやっぱりracist というレッテルを貼られてしまうわけですが、ジョルソンの伝記を見ると、黒人の友人を多く持ち、差別に反対して黒人に白人と同等の扱いを要求し、しかもそういうふるまいが決して見せかけのものではなかったという印象を受けます。ユダヤ人であったことが関わっているのかわかりません。

　　　そのジョルソンが、フォスターの伝記映画 Swanee River (1939) に出てフォスターの歌を歌っていることは知っていましたがモーリちゃんの父はこの映画は見ていません、たぶん（見たとしたら中学生のころ）。日本のhidecoleman さんというかたが、たいへんきれいな映像をアップしてくださっているので貼りつけます。（2003年の映画著作物70年へ延長の前に公開50年を経ているから著作権は切れていると判断されます。）

　　Al Jolson は Christy ミンストレル楽団のEdwin P. Christy の役です。歌は"Oh! Susanna" と "De Camptown Races" （「草競馬」）。「おおスザンナ」は1番と3番しか歌っていないようです。曲のあと "Oh! Susanna" の楽譜が飛ぶように観客に買われる様子が映されています。もうひとつ、おそらくエンディングのシークウェンスで、歌は、「アメリカのすべての人々のための歌」とクリスティーが紹介する "Swanee River" 。


　　
    "AL JOLSON sings a STEPHEN FOSTER medley"　という投稿はAl Jolson が歌うFoster の歌曲を8曲入れたオムニバス映像です。最後に "Oh! Susanna" が入っており、ここでJolson は「問題」の2番を、ちょっと歌詞を変えているようですが、歌っています。（2番で切れているので何番まで歌ったのかはわかりませんが）。投稿者のHavago 1 (= Pat Phillips ?) さんは次のような説明を書き添えています。長いですが、全部を引用します。

These eight Stephen Foster melodies serve as a showcase for Foster and Al Jolson; in what was Jolson's final studio recordings for Decca ... Three months later he died aged 64 on October 23rd 1950. It is well for us that he left this legacy of Stephen Foster songs.

In this upload, I have purposely used blackface sketches of AL Jolson as well as including Stephen Foster's song "Old Black Joe" ... These being two factors that are often commonly used against Jolson and Foster as being racist! The truth is that both these men had a genuine admiration for black people; they sympathised with the black race during times when sympathy for blacks, by whites, was lacking.

If you are a black person and reading this; please listen to the words of Foster and listen to the 64 year old Jolson's sincerity of voice via this video ... I ask you respectfully; can you honestly say that they really reflect racism (in the bad sense) or even harm to the black race?

The use of blackface motley by Al Jolson was a music hall tradition of its time, used by both white and black for audiences of both black and white (albeit sometimes segregated within the US) ... but; quite rightly and with good reason; it is not to be tolerated in these present times. However, it is still part of living history ... I beg you, with respect, do not look through the wrong end of the telescope by confusing Jolson and Foster with those who would seek to do harm to the black person! ... ... Pat Phillips.
