    アマゾンへ、どうしょうもないとわかった本（The Four-Pools Mystery ではないです）を返品（返本）しようと、 モーリちゃんの父は日曜日にあれこれと調べていたのですけど（この件はいずれ成功したら書くかもしれません）、返送用の値段を調べようとUSPS (United States Postal Service) のホームページを開いて、Pricesのところを見たら、つぎのような広告が上に載っていました――

 

  「永久切手　今買って、永久に使って。　あなたの買って⇒」みたいな。ちがうか。

　　モーリちゃんの父は、これは一度買うと永久に使える切手、と、もちろん思いました。はがすのはどーすんだろーなー、とは思いましたが。何十ドルかするのだろうなあとか。あと、これと同じデザインの切手は4月に郵便局で買ってもいましたが、それがむしろ思考をただす方向に作用しないのがアメリカという土地の不思議なところ（ｗ。

　　　で、クリックして見ると、 "Issue City: Washington, DC 20066 Issue Date: May 12, 2008" として、次の記述がありました。――

On May 12, 2008, in Washington, DC, the Postal Service™ re–issued the non–denominated First–Class Mail definitive Forever Stamp™ (Liberty Bell). The stamp was designed by Carl T. Herrman of Carlsbad, California. The stamp was first issued in 2007.

The Forever stamp will always be valid as First–Class postage on standard envelopes weighing one ounce or less, regardless of any subsequent increases in the First–Class rate. The stamp art depicts the Liberty Bell, which is perhaps the most prominent and recognizable symbol associated with American independence. Over the years, the historic significance of the bell’s message has transcended our national borders, and today the Liberty Bell is an international icon of freedom. Replicas of the Liberty Bell exist in all fifty states and the District of Columbia.

The stamp art features a computer–generated image of the Liberty Bell by nationally acclaimed artist Tom Engeman of Brunswick, Maryland. His previous projects for the Postal Service include stamped cards for Carlsbad Caverns National Park (2002), Ohio University (2003), and Columbia University (2003), as well as the 2003 American Eagle definitive stamp, and the National World War II Memorial stamp issued in 2004.

 　　2007年に最初に発行された切手が5月12日に増刷されたというのでした。で、1オンス以下の1st クラスの郵便料金として永久に有効な切手だと。今後郵便料金が値上げされてもForever 切手は使えるというのでした。

　　　なあんだ。そういうことか。

　　　2007年4月12日に41セントで発売開始を伝えるUSPS 内のニュース (2007.3.26)― "USPS Stamp News: Nation Gets Sneak Peak Peek of the Forever Stamp" <http://www.usps.com/communications/newsroom/2007/sr07_011.htm> 。この記事を見ると2007年5月14日に41セントから42セントになってもみたいに書かれているのですが・・・・・・モーリちゃんたちは去年のことはぜんぜんわかりません。

　　　さて、「自由の鐘」はSabuda のAmerica the Beautiful の裏カバーにもひびわれた姿でイラストが載っていますが、モーリちゃんの父が最初に行くことを考えていたPhiladelphia に本物はあるはずです。しかし50州全部（とWashington DC）にレプリカがあったのは知りませんでした。 あ、日本版のウィキペディアはていねいな記事のようです（「自由の鐘」）。・・・・・・あー、英語版からの翻訳ですか。

　　　それで、Wikipediaにも載っている写真を見ても、よく刻印された字が読めないのですけど、切手（の元画）は読めますねー。さすがコンピューター。本物以上のリアリティー。

     それで、あれこれ見てみると、やっぱり郵便料金があがってました。1st　クラスだと41セント→42セントの値上げ―― まず今年2008.4.29のニュース "Stamps to go up a penny; save forever by buying Forever Stamps now: Postage prices — U.S. & International — to go up May 12" <http://www.usps.com/communications/newsroom/localnews/co/co_wy_mt_2008_0429.htm>

　　　そして、今年5月12日の値上げを前にForever Stamps が買われるというニュース―― "Every Time a Bell Rings…Another Forever Stamp is Sold: Postal Service Customers Prepare for New Prices on May 12" <http://www.usps.com/communications/newsroom/2008/pr08_041.htm>

     去年は値上げしなかったんですかね。

　　　いちばんでかい自由の鐘切手画像はUSPS内のここのリンクです。USPD Download Center <http://www.usps.com/communications/newsroom/2007stamps/forever/welcome.htm> で、以下のように指示があります。――

For news reporting purposes ONLY, please feel free to reproduce the image under the following guidelines:

1. The Stamp Image must be in full color (if the publication is in color) and must be depicted in its entirety without any additions or deletions.
2. If the Stamp Image is reproduced within 75 - 150% of actual size, a line must be drawn through the word “forever” to indicate cancellation.
3. The following language must be printed underneath or within close proximity of the Stamp Image:

　　ということで、この記事はニュースです。そして「1.．切手の画像はカラー（もしもニュース媒体がカラーなら）で、画像全体をあらわすものとし、追加や削除はダメ。 2.　切手の画像が実際の大きさの75～150パーセント内で再現される場合、"forever"という語に重なるように削除線を引かねばならない。3. 次のコピーライトのことばを切手画像の下か近いところに印字しなければならない。」というガイドラインにしたがいつつはってけさせていただきます。（ねえさんニュースです）。

えっ　この切手ずっと使えるんですか
ちょっと前にたまたま郵便局で買って、使おうとしたら金額が書いてなくて2007という数字だけが印刷されていたので、何だこれ使えねえ、しかも去年のだし、とかいって怒ってたところでした
First Class Mailの切手はしょっちゅう値上がりするので、1セント切手も一緒に買いだめしなくてはいけなくて、めんどくさかったのです

shj さん、はじめまして。
はい。わたしは4月にアメリカにやってきて初めて入った郵便局の自販機でわけもわからず2セントや26セントの切手と一緒にこれの切手シート〈ブック？）を買いました。金額がないのでもっぱら小切手送付用に使っておったのですが、そういうことでした。
やっぱりしょっちゅう値上げしているのですか。なるほど。

ひんぱんに値上げされているのですね。昨年４０が４１になったときに発売された切手だったのですね。ようやくわかりました。

頻繁に値上げされているのですね。昨年４０から４１にあがるときに発売されたものだと知りました。
