September 2 ハーフ・プライス・ブックス Half Price Books

   第一にAlbanyのマドさん、いやバークレーの窓さん、いやマドさんの母君の窓＠Berkeleyのブログの明日3日の記事に「Half Price Books＠Berkeley 」が書かれることを透視し、刺激を受けたのと、第二にさっきアルバニー＝バークレーのSolano 通りのお祭りについて書いて前に貼った昔の古本屋地図をまたアップしたらそこにHalf Price Books が載っていたのとで、情報を補足的に書きます（例によって現在役に立たない昔の情報が入るところがはかないのですが、インターネットは情報の墓場でもあるのだろうから、過去の記憶を蘇らせたり不在のモノたちを現前させたりすることは似つかわしいふるまいなのではないか、とそんな気もするモーリちゃんの父です）。

　　Half Price Books は1994年のバークレーではTelegraph 通りに1軒、そしてソラノ通りに1軒ありました。現在はシャタックの店に統合されてしまった（かテレグラフのが移転して、ソラノはつぶれた） ようです。ソラノ通りでいうと、Pegasus Books (1855 Solano Ave., Berkeley, CA 94707――ここも新しい本もおく古本屋です。そしてここも昔はソラノと大学のそば（2349 Shattuck Ave., Berkeley, CA 94704）とふたつ店がありました) しかないです。地図だとさらにアルバニー寄りの Frank Morley の古書店も消えていました。Frank Morley という人は、テレグラフのMoe's の故Moe Moskowitz、消えてしまったCody's の創業者の故Fred Cody と並んで3人の最も尊敬された書店主だったのですが。あ、あとついでに書きますけれど、『地球の歩き方』にはMoe's を「モエ」と表記してることにこのあいだ気づきました。モエはない、と思うのですがモウ。（でも名前の発音はわからんですから断言は控えておいて、今度いったら訊いてみますか、萌え）。

　　さて、モーリちゃんの父もたしか5月にシャタックのHalf Price Books に立ち寄り、ついクセで、帰り際にパンフレットとかをもらってきました（確か色違いで何種類かあったような・・・・・・さすがにモーリちゃんのようになんでももらわないと気が済まないということはないので1種しかもらわなかったですが）。

   100MB 中すでに50MBを消費してしまった画像ファイル容量ですので、要領よく小さな画像をと思いながらついサービスしてしまったり、逆に感情で勘定をまちがったりとかしてしまうのですが、これでは読めないでしょうね。下のほうの文章は一部、Half Price のHP <http://www.halfpricebooks.com/> のなかの "Our Story" と重なっています。

　　ということで、今年で35周年だそうです。カリフォルニアには現在3店舗あるわけで、それがパンフレットの裏表紙にあがっている。ホームページでは、チェーンのスーパーマーケットとかと同じく "store locator" がついています――"Half Price Books: Store Locator"。ざっと数えて100は超えていますね。

　　Charlene Akers という女性の書き手はHeyday Books というバークレーの出版社からカリフォルニア関係の本を何冊か出していて、920 O'Farrell Street のIntroduction を書いているのも彼女だったのですが、Akers が90年代に出した本のなかに　First & Foremost: A Guide to Northern California's Independent Bookstores (Berkeley: Heyday Books, 1996) があります。

    で、この本には古本屋があんまり入っていないのが残念みたいなあまぞんのReview を4月に読んだ記憶がありますけれど、モーリちゃんの父は4月に注文して買ってたのですわ、この本も、偶然のように。古本屋情報を得ようと思ったのではなく（そちらは、Charlene Akers, Never Buy Anything New: A Guide to 400 Secondhand, Thrift, and Consignment Stores in the Bay Area (Berkeley: Heyday Books, 1992) のほうに期待してくだけました―参照「April 25 メンフィスの白いバラ The White Rose of Memphis」）、こちらは文字通りに独立独歩の特色のある本屋さんについて知りたかっただけです。しかし、ほんとに古本屋が入っていたのでした。サンフランシスコのGreen Apple Books (506 Clement St., San Francisco, CA94118; Size: 5500 square feet; Focus: General [new, used])とか。まあ確かに新本も置いてあるでかい古本屋ではあったが。そして今も昔も新本を置いている Moe's Books (Size: 13,000 square feet) も入っています。もちろん Cody's (Size: 21,000 square feet) やサンフランシスコの City Lights Bookstore (Focus: General [new]; Size: 2100 square feet) は中核的な存在です。だけど、確かに古本屋としか認識していなかった本屋も入っていたりする―― Forever After (1475 Haight St., San Francisco, CA 94117; Size: 1350 square feet; Focus: General, history, psychology, spirituality [used])。そして、Half Price Books。この、1996年に刊行された、北カリフォルニアのindependent bookstores の本は、ソラノの店とダウンタウン・バークレーの店と、両方をあげています。後者については "Half Price Books, Records & Magazines / 2525 Telegraph Ave., Berkeley, CA 94704; Hours:Daily 10-10; Size: 2500 square feet; Focus: General (new, used); used videos"   そしてHalf Price Books については前項を見よ、と書かれていて、ソラノの店のほう――

    Although part of a 52-store chain headquartered in Dallas, Texas, each Half Price store is a unique reflection of the community it serves; because they buy from the public all day long, the stock varies from store to store.  In the Solano Avenue store, 75% of the books are used and the rest are remainders, new discount books, and packager promotion titles (copies of expensive books reproduced in a less expensive format with cheaper paper and/or fewer color illustrations).  Formerly a drugstore, the beautiful, two-story bookstore features fiction, popular art, cooking, home repair, and theatre on the first floor, and nonfiction and academic texts downstairs.  The constantly changing inventory ranges from 1930s Life magazines to current best-selling paperback novels.

   ここでシャーリンさんが述べているリクツはおそらく正しいのでしょう。52店舗のチェーン店のひとつだけれど、それぞれの土地に育まれた独自性があると。その考えは、そっくり反復されるかのように、現在のHalf Price Books の "Different stores. Different stories." という標語にエコーとして響いています。それに、ソラノにあったHalf Price Books をモーリちゃんの父は、バークレーの大学からはるばる北へ歩いて行ってトンネルを抜けてソラノ通りへ出て、 Pegasus、Frank Morley、 Half Price と、見てまわり、さすがに疲れたので帰りはバスに乗って戻って、でも途中で中華料理を食べた遠い夏の日の記憶のなかで懐かしんでいます。もはや存在しないものとして。そして今のシャタックの、若い元気な青年たちが店員のHalf Price もぜんぜん嫌いじゃないです。

　　だけど、ともともとヘソマガリのモーリちゃんの父のなかの天邪鬼はちょっと反発する。それってほんとにindependent なの?   

　　この本は品切れのようです（まあ、載ってる店の半分が不在となったガイドブックを買う人はあんまりおらんだろう）。冒頭のAcknowledgment （謝辞）のなかで、著者は "I am grateful to all of the independent booksellers of Northern California for their generous cooperation, courtesy, intelligence, humor, and wisdom, which not only made this book possible, but a pleasure to write. I would like to acknowledge in particular the board of directors of the Northern California Independent Booksellers Association, executive director Ginie Thorp, and associate director Hut Landon." と書いています。そして、この本は、"Published in cooperation with the Northern California Independent Booksellers Association"　とタイトルページの下に書かれているのでした。

　　なんだー。アソシエーションとアソシエートして書かれたのかあ。だとすれば、その北カリフォルニア独立書籍販売業者組合とやらに入っているかいないかがこの本に載る載らないにおおいに関係したのだろうなあ、と想像されるわけです。そしてPegasus Books のAmy Thomas が当時の Northern California Independent Booksellers Association の会長であったことを知って、いささか愕然としたモーリちゃんの父なのでした。まあ、個人の古本屋はインデペンデントだと思いますけどー。
