September 17 ストラムスティックなおおスザンナ Oh! Susanna Played with a Strumstick

    strumstick の "strum" というのは「弦をかき鳴らす」 というような意味があるのだけれど、どうも調べてみると、Appalachian dulcimer、つまり、ヨーロッパに古くからあって、ピアノやクラヴィコードの前身とされるダルシマーが、アメリカ南部のアパラチア地方でヘンなぐあいに発展した民族楽器のひとつのブランド名のようです。もう少し話をわかりやすくします。アパラチア・ダルシマーというのはヨーロッパのダルシマーとは形状がかなり異なっています。

    古いダルシマーがなんで弦楽器なのにピアノに発展していくかというと、ハンマーで弦を叩くからです。えーと、"hammered dulcimer" で画像検索とかすると出てくると思いますが、その古いダルシマーを演奏しているアーカンソーのDennis Lee さんのページからダルシマーについて説明している "About the Hammered Dulcimer"の説明を借りれば――

The word "Dulcimer" comes from the Latin words "Dulcis" for sweet, and "Melos" for song. The hammered dulcimer is an ancient instrument and is even mentioned in the Bible; Daniel 3 Verse 10.

It is played by striking the strings with small wooden mallets, called "hammers". Historically it precedes the piano, inside of which the strings are struck by small padded "hammers".

　　　だけど、アパラチアン・ダルシマーはこれと違ってもはやアメリカの民族楽器とされているもので、"mountain dulcimer" とも呼ばれるもの。形はヴァイオリンを細長く引き伸ばしたようなものから、シャモジかウクレレを細長く引き伸ばしたようなものまでいろんな種類があり、弦は３ないし４本で、膝に乗せてつまびきます。スコットランド、アイルランド系で入ってきたもののようで、おそらくもともとはバイオリンのボディーをピーナツ状にダブらせたような、というか、８の字型というか、こういうやつに近かったのでしょうけれど――

　　North Georgia Foothills Dulcimer Association という団体の人たちの抱えているダルシマーもこのタイプです("hammered dulcimer" もカバーしているようではありますが）。

    で、ですが、このアパラチアン・ダルシマーを原型とした現代の弦楽器がいくつかあって、"Dulcitar," "pickin' stick," "Pick 'n' Stick," "strumbly," "sweetstick," "Strumstick" などです。画像的には「アパラチアン・ダルシマーにaddicted かも」のアーカンソーの山中にお住まいの収集家のWendell さんの"Home Page of Dulciaddict" を参照（音源へのリンク付）。

　　なんかダルシマーと比べると、こと（筝のこと）と大正琴くらいに隔たっているような気もしますが・・・・・・。

　　で、Strumstick というのはBob McNally という人（この人は存命です⇒マクナリーおじさんの映像(2:23)）がつくったもので、McNally　社の商品名です。日本でも話題になっている（た）(?) みたい――
