    遅ればせながら、シンディ・ローパーとダルシマーで日本語検索して、今年2008年5月の朝のテレビ番組で生ダルシマー弾き語りをしたということを知りました（朝のヒットスタジオ 5.15）

　　それから、英語で検索して、デイヴィッド・シュナウファーがシンディ・ローパーについて語っている文章を見つけました。――

Cyndi Lauper is my student, friend, teacher and inspiration. A New York based artist of worldwide renown, her distinctive voice and songs have shaped our musical landscape since 1983. It was a treat to find out years ago she was also a delcimore player who composed many of these songs on that instrument. We finally met in 1996 when I was working on my Tennessee Music Box project and was trying to find some country artist who would like to use the old box on a session. Cyndi heard me play ten seconds on the instrument and had an idea for her song "Fearless" from Sisters of Avalon. We recorded it together the next day. Other projects followed, and her own dulcimer playing has come to the forefront of her live appearances around the world. Probably more people have been introduced to the dulcimer through her than anyone in history. I was thrilled when she wanted to do a song on this disc. I wrote "Twilight Eyes" with my good friend, Herb McCullough, in 1987 and always hoped to hear her sing it. （シンディ・ローパーはぼくの教え子であり、友人であり、先生であり、霊感の源泉だ。ニューヨークをベースにして世界的な名声をもったアーチストで、その独特の声と歌は、1983年以来ぼくらの音楽シーンを形作ってきた。何年もまえのことだが、彼女もデルシモアを演奏するひとであり、この楽器を使ってたくさんの曲をつくっていることを知ったときは嬉しかった。そうして、1996年、ぼくがテネシー・ミュージック・ボックスの仕事をしているときにぼくたちは会った。ぼくが、古いミュージック・ボックスを使いたいといってくれるカントリーのアーチストを探していたときだった。シンディはぼくがこの楽器を演奏するのを10秒聞いて、Sisters of Avalon の"Fearless"　という曲に活かすアイデアを思いついた。ぼくたちは翌日一緒にレコーディングした。それからいろいろな企画があったりして、やがて彼女自身のダルシマー演奏は、彼女の世界をまわる公演の柱になった。おそらく、歴史上、他の誰よりも、シンディ・ローパーを通してひとびとはダルシマーを知ったのではないか。ぼくは彼女がこのアルバムで一曲参加したいといってくれたときに興奮した。"Twilight Eyes" は親しい友人のハーブ・マカルーと1987年に書いた曲で、いつもシンディが歌ってくれたらと願っていた曲だ。ぼくの人生の最も "magical musical moments" 魔術的な音楽の時間をありがとう、シンディ。）　

　　「マジカル・ミュージカル・モーメント」というのはまさかディズニーが最初ということはないと思うのですが、誰が最初に言い出したフレーズなのでしょうか。鞭で知りません。この文章はどうやら1999年のシュナウファー自身のアルバムに書かれたものだと思われます。そのときシンディ・ローパーは2曲目のボーカルで参加したのでした。（これは"David Schnaufer ~ Memorial Page" のトップで聞くことができます。同じMySpace.com のphotos にはTennessee Music Box をもったものも含むシュナウファーの写真が15枚ほど掲載されています。）

　　それから、上記の写真アルバムは、 "English Valley" におけるシュナウファー、というようなタイトルがついているのですが、テネシー州 Hendersonville にある "English Valley Music" という音楽スタジオ（アルバムDelcimore もここでつくられました）の Jan L. Pulsford という人が、シンディ・ローパーとデイヴィッド・シュナウファーの出会いを回想する文章を書いています。――

I was fortunate to work with David on many projects at my recording studio, English Valley Music, in the woods of Hendersonville, Tennessee, starting in 1995 when Cyndi Lauper, a dulcimer player herself, flew down from New York in search of David. We tracked him down to a class at Belmont and then to his apartment, which was like a shrine to his main love, the "Delcimore." All kinds of shapes and sizes of this peculiar American instrument adorned the walls and floors of his humble abode. Cyndi and I became fascinated with the Tennessee Music box and especially when we heard the tales, so eloquently told, of its origins. We invited him out to the studio to record with us for Cyndi's "Sisters of Avalon" album. That turned into one of those special magical nights along with one of the coldest! Not only did we record Cyndi's beautiful song "Fearless" live, with Cyndi strumming mountain dulcimer and David bowing the Tennessee Music Box but David regaled us with stories of the Melungeons and so the dance tune we were working on became a "Melungeon stomp." The Ballad of Cleo and Joe (as it was called) became a big club hit. 　　最初のところの時間的なつながりが曖昧ですが、たぶん、1995年から自分のスタジオでシュナウファーと制作をはじめたが、そのとき（1996年のはず）自分もダルシマーを演奏するシンディ・ローパーが、デイヴィッドに会いにニューヨークから飛んできた。で、シュナウファーが教えている大学へ行き、それから蒐集したさまざまのダルシマーで壁や床がいっぱいになったシュナウファーの自宅を訪問した。ふたりはシュナウファーがテネシー・ミュージック・ボックスを示してその楽器の起源についていろいろ話をしてくれてたいそう惹きつけられます。そしてアルバム制作への参加を要請する。その結果アルバムSisters of Avalon の 11曲目の "Fearless" ではシンディがマウンテン・ダルシマー（つまりアパラチアン・ダルシマー）を、デイヴィッドがテネシー・ミュージック・ボックスを弾くことになり、さらに、ダンス・チューンとして考えられていた 2曲目の "Ballad of Cleo + Joe" については、シュナウファーが "Melungeon" の話でさんざ笑かしてくれたかなんかしたんで "Melungeon stomp"になったと書かれています。ようわかりません。この曲です――"Cyndi Lauper - Ballad Of Cleo & Joe" (3:52) posted by "cyndilauperTV" on March 19,2007。

    さらに、シュナウファーが Sandy Conaster というナッシュヴィルのダルシマー奏者（大学以前の教え子）と一緒に1998年に Tennessee Folklore 誌に書いた "Tennessee Music Box: History, Mystery and Revial" というペーパーには、いわゆるアパラチアン・ダルシマーが19世紀末に現在の形になる、そのはるか以前から "music box" という呼ばれ方で存在し、1880年代まではつくられていた手作りの民俗楽器、古いタイプのアパラチアン・ダルシマーについての歴史的な考察が書かれているのですが、最後の "Revival" の節には、ややパーソナルな、Cyndi Loper への言及と、彼女の今後の活躍への期待が記されています。――

The Tennessee music box has been silent for half a century, collecting dust in barns and corn cribs or under the beds of relatives who hung onto the memories of their grandparents' old tunes.  Due to this research and David Schnaufer's career as a recording artist, the music box is enjoying a revival not only in folk music but popular, rock and classical music as well.  He states, "In 1996, during the Tennessee Bicentennial, I featured the music box on a solo dulcimer recording that showcased the various styles of playing - fingerpicking, quill and noter, and bowing.  This recording begins with "All the Good Times are Past and Gone," the first tune which Lawrence Gamble played for us.  During the time of this recording, I was visited by Cyndi Lauper, also a dulcimer player, who was charmed by the sound of the box and wanted me to play it on a song she was recording for a new album.  The bowed music box provided a very ancient bagpipe drone to her dulcimer and vocal rendition of the song "Fearless" on the album, Sisters of Avalon.  Cyndi has a huge following all over the world, and sales of this album are introducing millions to the unique voice of the music box.  She will be acquiring a box of her own soon, and the combination of the traditional sounds and her considerable composition skills will provide new music from this instrument for years to come. 

  "also a dulcimer [delcimore] player" と、ほぼ同じフレーズが使われています。それではシンディ・ローパーがデイヴィッド・シュナウファーの "student" だったというのはどういう事情なのでしょう。　

　　ヴァンダービルト大学のホームページには "Vanderbilt University Register" というページがあり、といっても名簿が載っているわけではないのですが、Jessica Howard という人が書いた、生前のシュナウファーの記事（おそらく2002年4月）が掲載されてます。そのなかで、教育者としてのシュナウファーについてふれているところで、シンディ・ローパーが出てきます。――

Schnaufer said he "keeps a lot of students."  He's taught people from a 5-year-old girl to an elderly man to 1980s pop rocker Cyndi Lauper.  Lauper traveled to the Blair School in 1997 to take dulcimer lessons from him.  A dulcimer player since she was 21 years old, Lauper provides the vocals for the track "Twilight Eyes" on Schnaufer's 1999 CD, Delcimore.

　　この記事によれば、シンディ・ローパーは21のときからダルシマーを演奏してきました。1997年――シュナウファーを訪ねて、アルバムづくりに参加してもらった翌年です――シンディ・ローパーは、シュナウファーからダルシマーのレッスンを受けるためにヴァンダービルト大学へ通ってきたのでした。

　　 こうして、ほぼ同年に生まれたふたりは、互いに刺激を与えあったのでした。シュナウファーの生年について、Wikipedia は"ca. 1953" （「1953年ごろ」）としています。それは亡くなった2003年8月23年から享年53を引いた推定でしょうが、実際は、1952年生まれのようです。

　　　カナダのジョニ・ミッチェルはシンディ・ローパーの10歳年長で1943年生まれです。思えば、戦後のフォークソング・リヴァイヴァルのころにアパラチアン・ダルシマーを復活させたジーン・リッチーがアパラチアン・ダルシマーについての最初の本 The Dulcimer Book* を著わすのが1963年でした。そうしてフォーク、カントリーだけでなく、ロック（ローリングストーンズが有名です）にも使われる（そういう音楽の時代になっていく）。シュナウファー自身、どうやらカントリーロックバンドにいたわけですが、まことに勝手な憶測では、民衆のものという意味でのフォーク――アメリカ的に言うとpeople なのかしら――への思いが後年ダルシマー蒐集とともに強くなったのかなあ、とも思います。
