   The Catcher in the Rye (1951) の主人公＝語り手のHolden Colefield のニューヨーク市内での軌跡は、日本でもなんかへんなペーパーバックのファン本で云々されたり、旅行会社の観光ツアー的な脚光も浴びたりして、少なくとも部分的には有名なのかもしれない。思えばもう50年以上も前の本だけれど（さらに思えばグレート・ギャツビーなんかもう80年も前の本だｗ）、小説の舞台となっているニューヨークの変化と無変化の微妙なバランスが、ノスタルジアと作品／作者への愛着を高めるものなのかもしれない（自分がそうだというのではない）。
　　昨年の記事だけれど、いまもネット内に複数のニュース記事として読めるもの――

    このHarpaz というAP の"travel editor" の文章は、"Enter a Christmas wonderland New York City" とか "Experience NYC at Christmastime, using 'Catcher in the Rye' as a travel guidebook" とか "NYC at Christmas, using 'Catcher in the Rye' as your travel guidebook" とか "Visit New York at Christmastime, using 'Catcher in the Rye' as your travel guidebook" とか、さまざまにタイトルを変装、いや変奏させて、複数の「ニュース」サイトに転載されている（例によって、一部ハショッタリ、執筆者名が落とされていたりする）。

　　記事のなかで、"the Rockefeller Center skating rink," "Radio City and the Rockettes," "the zoo and carousel in Central Park," "Grand Central," "the American Museum of Natural History," "the Metropolitan Museum of Art" などが「名所」としてリストアップされる。

　　ラジオシティーのロケッツのショーについては、昨年2007年が、75年目ということで、冒頭に写真入りで以下のキャプションが付いている――

The Radio City Rockettes perform in the annual "Radio City Christmas Spectacular," marking its 75th year in New York.  In the 1951 publication of "The Catcher in the Rye," its main character Holden Caulfield wanders around Manhattan at Christmastime visiting key landmarks, including Radio City and the Rockettes. （ラジオシティー・ロケッツは毎年恒例のニューヨークでの「ラジオシティー・クリスマス・スペクタキュラー」の75年の節目の公演をおこなう。1951年に出版された『ライ麦畑で捕まえ手』のなかで、主人公のホールデン・コールフィールドはクリスマスにマンハッタンを彷徨し、ラジオシティーとロケッツを含む主要な見所を訪れる。）

　　まちがいはないです。話の本体は土曜・日曜・月曜の3日間の出来事で、ラジオシティーに行くのは、土曜（つらつら思い起こせば、そもそも第1章は、フェンシングの試合のためにニューヨークへ行ってへまをして戻ってきたところなのだが）夜にニューヨークに出て行ってホテルに一泊した翌日の日曜日の夜です(第18章)。昼間にはガールフレンドのサリーとデートしてスケートをしたあと、Jane Gallagher に電話をするがつながらず、夜の10時にCarl Luce （カール・ルイスではない）と会う約束をしますが、時間があるので近くのラジオシティーに映画を観に行ったといういきさつです。最初の下線部が、ロケッツのハイキックのラインダンスの描写です。――

I had quite a bit of time to kill till ten o'clock, so what I did, I went to the movies at Radio City.  It was probably the worst thing I could've done, but it was near, and I couldn't think of anything else.  I came in when the goddam stage show was on.  The Rockettes were kicking their heads off, the way they do when they're all in line with their arms around each other's waist.  The audience applauded like mad, and some guy behind me kept saying to his wife, "You know what that is?  That's precision."  He killed me.  Then, after the Rockettes, a guy came out in a tuxedo and roller skates on, and started skating under a bunch of little tables, and telling jokes while he did it. [. . .]  Then, after him, they had this Christmas thing they have at Radio City every year.  All these angels start coming out of the boxes and everywhere, guys carrying crucifixes and stuff all over the place, and the whole bunch of them--thousands of them--singing "Come All Ye Faithful!" like mad.  Big deal.  It's supposed to be religious as hell, I know, and very pretty and all, but I can't see anything religious or pretty, for God's sake, about a bunch of actors carrying crucifixes all over the stage.  When they were all finished and started going out the boxes again, you could tell they could hardly wait to get a cigarette or something.  I saw it with old Sally Hayes the year before, and she kept saying how beautiful it was, the costumes and all.  I said old Jesus probably would've puked if He could see it--all those fancy costumes and all.  Sally said I was a
sacrilegious atheist.  I probably am.  The thing Jesus really would've liked would be the guy that plays the kettle drums in the orchestra.  I've watched that guy since I was about eight years old.  My brother Allie and I, if we were with our parents and all, we used to move our seats and go way down so we could watch him.  He's the best drummer I ever saw.  He only gets a chance to bang them a couple of times during a whole piece, but he never looks bored when he isn't doing it.  Then when he does bang them, he does it so nice and sweet, with this nervous expression on his face.  One time when we went to Washington with my father, Allie sent him a postcard, but I'll bet he never got it.  We weren't too sure how to address it.  After the Christmas thing was over, the goddam picture started.  It was so putrid I couldn't take my eyes off it.  It was about this English guy, Alec something, that was in the war and loses his memory in the hospital and all. [. . .] 

   最初の下線部「全員が一列のラインになって互いの腰に手をまわしてやる、すげーケリを入れていた」（どういう訳じゃ）のあと、うしろのおっちゃんが細君に「あれ、なんちゅうか知ってる。プレシジョンだよ」と繰り返し言ったのにまいった、とか書かれています。最近ラインダンスから頭が離れていました（いいことかもしれない）が、precision (dance) は「August 29 ラインダンスとフォークダンス (2) 　Line Dances and Folk (2)」で書いたように、イギリスのTillers (Tiller Girls) の系統を、1925年結成のアメリカのロケッツが受け継いだものです。 最初はセントルイス・ミズーリ・ロケッツとして発足、そして1932年からラジオシティー・ミュージックホールで公演を行なうようになる。

　　さて、ホールデンが入ったときに、映画の前のショーをやっていたわけです。上記の新聞記事は、本文中ではロケッツについて次のように解説しています。――

ROCKEFELLER CENTER: Holden Caulfield took a date skating at the ice rink here, and he also caught a show at Radio City. In those days, the famous Rockettes performed in between movies, but today, the dancers' trademark kickline is the main attraction at the annual "Radio City Christmas Spectacular," which celebrates its 75th year this season. Take Radio City's "Stage Door Tour" and meet one of the Rockettes, or take the elevator up at 30 Rockefeller Plaza for a bird's eye view of the city from Top of the Rock, the observatory on the 67th, 69th and 70th floors. (It's the building where the fictional TV show 30 Rock is set.)

　　当時は、現在と違って、ロケッツのパフォーマンスは映画の幕間に行われていた、と。（なお、"Stage Door Tour" については "Tours - Radio City Music Hall - New York City" <http://www.radiocity.com/tours/index.html> 、あるいは写真付きの "Radio City Music Hall Stage Door Tour" <http://www.lovetoeatandtravel.com/site/us/NY/Fun/radio_tour.htm> を参照）。

　　そういう形態自体は納得できます。しかし、クリスマスのときもそうだったのかなあ、という疑問がツラツラと沸いています。The New York Times Magazine の10月26日号の記事　"Forever Young -- and Spectacular" は、ラジオシティーのロケッツのクリスマスショーの半分宣伝記事ですけれども、そこに1933年のクリスマス・スペクタキュラー開始以来毎年欠かさず観にいっているというスペクタキュラーオタクじいさんが紹介されています。今年82歳のアダムさんが最初に連れられていったのは6歳の時。"I remember that wonderful feeling.  I told my mother I would like to see it every year, and we did.  I still get that elation in mind and spirit every time I see it, and I feel like a kid again.  I look forward to it all year."  記事の後半には、地の文で、つぎのように書かれています。――

     Of course, legendary fan-favorites, a core of the show since 1933, remain, including Parade of the Wooden Soldiers, with the Rockettes strutting their stuff in near military precision, and the Living Nativity, featureing those legendary live camels, donkeys and sheep.
     "This is a real special occasion show; a New Yorkinstitution," says Hochwald, noting that for the first time, this New York institution will be touring the country.  "There is no other show in the country or the world of this scale, with this kind of continuum, in which people come back year after year with their families.  And it continues to grow and evolve, creating new memories for new generations of adults and kids."

   上の段落では、1933年のショー開始以来、続いてきた出し物として、「木の兵隊のパレード」と「キリスト生誕劇」（っていうんですかねえ。馬小屋で生まれるイエスとまわりのロバ、ヒツジとかがだいたい出てくるお芝居として一般にある。ロケッツのクリスマス・スペクタキュラーは本物の動物たちを出演させてきたみたい）が挙げられ、下の段落では、家族が毎年やってくる、これだけの規模の、長年の伝統のあるショーは他にない、という主旨です。そうすると、クリスマスのときは特別に昔からあったんじゃなかろうか、とかんぐりたくもなり・・・・・・

　　が、今回調べてみて、英語のWikipedia であっさりと疑問は氷解しました―― "Radio City Christmas Spectacular" <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radio_City_Christmas_Spectacular>。

　　ラジオシティー・ミュージックホールができて翌年の1933年12月21日から2週間、ミュージカル映画『Flying Down to Rio』をフィーチャーして最初のクリスマスショーが催されます。演出はホールのプロデューサーLeon Leonidoffと、ライザ・ミネリのお父さんとして有名なVincente Minnelli。プログラムの中にあったロケッツの演目が "Parade of the Wooden Solders" （振り付けはロケッツの生みの親のRussell Markert ）と"Living Nativity" でした。

　　そして、ウィキペディアによれば、1979年に、それまでのような長編映画の合間の30分間のショーというスタイルをやめ、さまざまの新たな企画や技術を入れた90分間のメインで拡大したスペクタキュラー・ショーとなったということです。

　　ということで、1951年あたりでは、確かに映画を上演しており、そっちがいちおうはメインであったことはわかりました。しかし、1933年から欠かさず観てきたというアダムじいさんは、やっぱり30分の幕間のショーをめあてに行ったのでしょー。そして、おもしろいのは、ホールデンの回想から、前年はサリーと来ていたし（"I saw it with old Sally Hayes the year before"）、これはロケッツではない演目のなかで"kettle drums" ――変わった太鼓を指す場合もあるけれど、たぶんtimpaniのこと――を叩く男に関して書かれていることだけれども、8歳の時から観に来ていたことがわかります（"I've watched that guy since I was about eight years old."）。あんたも好きねえ。

　　ちなみにトリヴィアな世界に入っていくと――この小説が単行本として出版されるのは1951年7月16日のこと。作品冒頭でホールデンは南カリフォルニアの病院に入っていて、前の年のクリスマスのこととして物語を語ります。（論理的妥当性には目をつぶって、ちなみに）1950年のカレンダーは12月23日が土曜日、24日が日曜日、25日が月曜日でした。でも学校がクリスマス休暇に入ってすぐのこととなっているので、そのへん、どうかしら。ちなみに今年2008年のモーリちゃんの小学校の冬休みは20日の土曜日からです。

　　ラジオシティーのクリスマス・スペクタキュラーの最初の年の2週間の公演の初日は12月21日ですが、1933年の21日は木曜日でした・・・・・・1950年と同じですね（だからなにｗ）。ちょっと因数factors が多くて、検証する余裕はないですけど、後日のひまつぶしのために列挙しておきます。――(1) 現在は長期の公演になっているラジオシティーのクリスマスショーは、ともかく初年度は2週間のものだったのが、1950年ごろにはどうだったのか、(2) アメリカの学校は金曜日までやってから休みに入る、という感じが個人的にはあるけれど、そのへんどうなのか、どうだったのか、(3) 作品テキストに年月日を特定できる情報はあったか（本も手元になく、思い出せません）、(4) サリンジャー (1919年1月1日ニューヨークはマンハッタンの生まれ)自身のロケッツ体験はどんなものだったのか。

　　(5) ついでに書いておくと、サリンジャーは1932年にMcBurney School のninth grade に転入、しかし、（転入じゃなくて「入学」としている日本語ウィキペディアの記述を信じれば、「学業不振を理由に1年で退学処分となってしま」い、「その後ペンシルバニアのミリタリースクールヴァリー・フォージに入学し卒業まで過ごす」(「J・D・サリンジャー - Wikipedia」)。そうすると1932年から1933年にかけて、"ninth and tenth grades" ("J. D. Salinger - Wikipedia”)  に在籍し、1933年の暮れのラジオシティーを見たとな（ちがいますｗ）。なんにしても、1933年の12月まではロケッツのラジオシティーにおけるクリスマスショーはありませんでした。また、小説の原型とされる短篇 "I'm Crazy" が雑誌Collier's に発表されたのは1945年12月なのでした。
